In today’s world, people are connecting at a faster and faster pace. From singles websites, Instagram, Facebook Groups, and even websites designed to help you cheat on your spouse, we are awash in technological solutions to problems we did not even know existed. In days of old, connections were made in person, one on one. “Can I buy you a drink?” “Do you have the time?” “What brings you here?” These are probably phrases that have tumbled out of our mouths at one time or another in those early awkward dating years. Sometimes they worked… and sometimes they failed miserably…not unlike a magic trick. When people discover I’m a magician, I have often been asked if I used magic to meet girls when I was growing up. Did I perform a card trick or read someone’s mind to make a connection? And the answer is, technically, yes and no. Since the legal drinking age in Pennsylvania was 21, I had little experience in using magic as an attraction in a bar or night club setting since I was already dating my wife by that time. However, considering I actually did meet my wife by performing a magic trick for her when she was only 16 years old, then the answer has to be yes, I did use magic to make that connection. And considering that connection resulted in us being married for 43 years… I think it is safe to say… that magic trick really worked. My wife tells me I should point out she was very gullible at that young age… but then again she has not disappeared yet!
But it is not necessary to be a magician to take advantage of the power of a magical connection. It’s not about performing the magic trick… it is about experiencing the magic together… often for the very first time. With my new show Miracles & Other Deceptions: The Close Up Magic of Paul Gertner at the Omni Parker House in Boston, I’ve noticed an interesting pattern developing among my audience. While we are thrilled to have people attending the show celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and couples and families (recommended for 13 or older) simply looking for something new… I have also noticed an interesting phenomenon. I’m getting a very high percentage of couples out on a first date coming to my show. And when you think about it… it really makes sense. If you are a younger couple (or older one for that matter) and looking for something to do with a person you are just getting to know… Miracles & Other Deceptions: The Close Up Magic of Paul Gertner may be just the ticket. First, seeing Close Up Magic for the first time in a formal setting is a one of a kind experience. There are only a few places in the world you can go (like The Magic Castle in Hollywood) to witness a formal Close Up Magic show so you can be assured you are bringing your guest to a unique event. Second, and this is the best part… the magic in the show will create a topic of conversation for you to discuss throughout the entire remainder of your evening. Having just seen the show, there will be no awkward moments during dinner, or searching for conversations because the question of: “How did he do that?” will become a topic of discussion throughout the evening. Best of all, those conversations can lead to other interesting discussions about what is real and what is not and what is possible in this amazing world around us.
If a little magic can help spark those type of connections you never know where they may lead to for you and your new friend. Enjoy the Magic!
